The Heart of Southern India History

The history of Chennai is predominantly marked by the rise and fall of great South Indian dynasties such as the Chola's, then Pallava's, followed by Vijayanagar rulers then the Mughal rulers and  colonial powers. It boasts of a glorious past and has a rich cultural heritage. The city has a plethora of monuments and temples which significantly reveal the ancient history  and which remind you of the bygone era.\

Madras Presidency was a very important, extensive, province of British India. It included much of southern India, the Malabar region of North Kerala, Lakshadweep Islands, the Coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema districts of Orissa and Karnataka. The presidency had its capital at Madras (now known as Chennai).

The modern capital of Tamilnadu reflects the British gothic style  architecture in its downtown buildings of High Court and other administrative blocks,  Churches like Santhome Basilica and Thomas cathedral, while the tourist attractions reveal the architecture of early South Indian dynasties.
